In the history of the Wildwood Police Department, thousands of men and women just like you, who were interested in law enforcement, obtained a position as a Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer. Many of these officers continued their careers with our department and others had different aspirations. Previous SLEO’s have moved into every field of law enforcement, be it, Municipal, County, State and even some Federal Agencies.
 
Your interest in our Department sets you apart from other people interested in becoming a police officer. Several communities in Cape May County employ SLEO’s, all of which have excellent departments. Wildwood however, is a major shore resort community and attraction destination, which brings thousands of visitors to our small island each and every day during the summer. Our SLEO’s are a vital part of our organization, and are actively involved in all aspects of the enforcement of all laws and ordinances, from minor parking offenses to major criminal investigations. The knowledge and experience our officers receive is unsurpassed and will surely aid in enhancing any future law enforcement employment opportunities in the future.
 
With this being said the Wildwood Police Department interviews hundreds of applicants every year. The earlier your application is received, the better chance you have of being selected for an interview. Being selected for an interview does not necessarily guarantee that you will be hired as a SLEO with our department, however all applications should be submitted as early as possible.
 
All eligible applicants are required to complete an interview, a thorough background investigation, a strenuous physical examination as well as both psychological and medical examinations. All applicants are encouraged to diligently prepare for the physical examination. The P.T. (Physical Training) test is extremely strenuous. If you are considering a career in law enforcement, you should be training right now. Applicants will be tested in areas of strength, agility, cardiovascular endurance and speed. Each applicant will be scored dependent upon his/her performance of each particular task and ranked according to score.
 
Applicants that fail to meet the minimum necessary standards will not be permitted to continue in the employment process.

There are two training sessions held yearly, the first session is a full time class that begins in Mid-May, concluding in the beginning of July. Successful graduates will begin patrol assignments for the Fourth of July weekend. The second session, known as the Winter Academy, is a part time session where applicants attend the Academy three nights a week and all day Saturday. The Winter Academy begins at the end of December, concluding in May. Successful graduates will begin patrol assignments for the Memorial Day Weekend.

All seasonal applicants must file an employment application with the City of Wildwood Police Department via the department’s website. All applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

To be eligible for consideration for employment as a Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer, all applicants must have the following qualifications and/or requirements:
 
1. Full time class dates are early-May to the beginning of July; Monday through Saturday
2. Part time winter academy begins at the end of December until Mid-May (three nights a week and all day on Saturday)
1.     Must be 18 years old at the time of requesting an application
2.     Must be able to read and write the English language
3.     Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent
4.     Must be sound in body and in good health and have good moral character
5.     Must obtain a medical questionnaire from the Wildwood Police Department and
have it completed by a licensed physician, at the applicant’s expense
6.     Must not have been convicted of any offense involving dishonesty or making
him/her unfit to perform the duties of his/her office
7.     Must pass a background investigation
8.     Must pass a physical examination
9.     Candidates will be paid $15 per hour while attending the police academy
10.   The Wildwood Police Department will supply a duty weapon and any other
equipment needed during your training; most clothing will be the responsibility of
the recruit
11.   Must supply your own transportation to the police academy
12.   Candidates are required to attend all classes at the police academy
13.    Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers are required to work a forty to forty-

ACADEMY TRAINING

A Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer must attend and graduate from the Cape May County Police Academy Training Facility, located in Cape May Court House, New Jersey.
 
The training requirements will average approximately three hundred (300) hours of training.
This facility is certified by the New Jersey State Training Commission. The training period schedule varies dependent upon which session the applicant is enrolled. The full time session schedule is Monday through Saturday and the part-time session schedule is three nights a week and all day Saturday.
 
During training at the Police Academy, recruits will be paid at a rate of $15 per hour. Upon successful completion of recruit training, the recruit will graduate the Police Academy and will receive a Certificate from the Police Training Commission, which is good throughout the State of New Jersey. Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers are required to complete weapons qualifications once per year with his/her duty weapon.
 
Recruits will receive training in several topics including the use of firearms. During instruction a written test will be given on firearms safety and the use of deadly force. Recruits are also required to qualify on the firearms range with your duty weapon, and must achieve a minimum score to continue training in the police academy.

Summer employment with the Wildwood Police Department varies from early May to mid-October. During the time a sworn Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer is employed, the rate of pay is $21.00 per hour.
 
During the summer season, this department employs an average of fifty Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers. Please note, that the City of Wildwood Police Department does not maintain a residency requirement for this position.

S.L.E.O DUTIES

Upon satisfactorily completing and graduating the police academy, the officer is then assigned to a duty which may consist of one or more of the following:
 
Squad Patrol
The officer is assigned with a full time officer to a patrol vehicle in a designated patrol sector. The officer will answer calls from citizens in reference to assaults, robberies, burglaries, fires, accidents, injured or sick persons, property checks, noise complaints and fights. Officers will also assist the walking beat patrol officers on arrests.
 
Squad patrol is currently a steady shift with shifts working a 7am x 3pm, 3pm x 11pm or 11pm x 7am schedule. Officers come under the direct supervision of two Sergeants who are the shift supervisors and a Lieutenant the shift commander.
 
Walking Patrol
Officers are assigned to a walking patrol in designated walking sectors. The officer will be assigned with a partner and required to maintain crowd control on the beach, boardwalk and various street locations. Officers also control traffic at intersections and keeps noise to a minimum. Officers are visible deterrents to disorderly groups, and those that may be engaged in fighting or drinking, and making arrests if and when necessary. Most walking patrol officers will come under the direct supervision of a Corporal.
 
Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers have the same powers and duties as a regular full time sworn police officer, however, they are hired under a different law which limits the amount of time they may work. Officers are permitted to work forty-eight hours per week for six months and for the remaining six months, they are only permitted to work twenty hours per week.
 
Officers are not permitted to carry a firearm off duty. The officer’s weapons must be locked and secured in the officer’s assigned locker, upon completion of his/her shift. The officer works a forty to forty-eight hour work week, with overtime, when it is necessary. The officer has the power of arrest only within the municipality in which they are employed, unless requested to enter another municipality for reasons of mutual aid.
 
Officers wear the same uniform and carry the same weapon as the regular officer. However, Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers must wear a shoulder patch that designates them as being a Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer.
 
Schools that have internships or co-op programs will receive full cooperation of the Wildwood Police Department.
 
The Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer is under the supervision of a regular full time officer as much as possible. The Corporal and Sergeants will supervise the officer’s work habits, review reports, uniform appearance and cleanliness, public contacts and assign them to respective posts. The Lieutenant, who is the Shift Commander, will make all final decisions on the Squad.
 
The Wildwood Police Department encourages all of our Class II Special Law Enforcement receiving satisfactory evaluations from their supervisors, to return for the following season. Several officers have been employed with our department for several seasons prior to their being selected by our department or other organizations in a full time capacity.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

During the summer season the City of Wildwood Police Department employs the use of civilian personnel in the form of Parking Enforcement Officers, or P.E.O.’s. These employees are charged with the enforcement of various parking infractions throughout the city including overtime meters. Historically parking enforcement officers work an eight hour shift, historically, 8a x 4p, 12p x 8p and 2p x 10p. In the past, several P.E.O.’s have furthered their careers by becoming Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers, and still others advanced to becoming a full time officer with our department or other organizations.
 
During the time you are employed as a P.E.O. your rate of pay is $17.00 per hour, and there is usually the opportunity to work additional hours if desired. This is a seasonal position beginning with Memorial Day Weekend and concluding with the Labor Day Weekend.
